Publication Review: Lithium to prevent Suicide
Increased suicide risk is associated with many psychiatric conditions, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Lithium is among the very few medications shown to reduce suicides. Here, we review a landmark publication by Thies-Flechtner et al., 1996. Over two decades later, it remains one of the most high quality research studies demonstrating the anti-suicidal effect of Lithium.
Publication Review: ADHD Medication Cardiovascular Side Effects
Many providers such as myself have found medications to be greatly beneficial for patients with ADHD. However, ADHD medications are not without potential side effects. In a 2024 paper published by Le Zhang et al., in JAMA Psychiatry, the authors analyzed patients with ADHD and found that long term exposure to ADHD medications was associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared to nonuse.
